We at Seropeco Australia Independent Building Supplies Pty Ltd feel we need to do something to help those that have suffered from these disasters and have decided to supply CSR Gyprock Plasterboard & Cemintel Fibre Cement Sheets to people in the disaster areas that did not have insurance or have had their claims denied by their insurance company at our invoice cost. To help those that are having trouble finding what relief is available we have compiled a brief summary of what Non Assets & Income Test assistance is available. You can also find information from the Queensland Government's Website.

The Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal has been extended to cover residents in Cyclone Yasi declared areas but applications for funding are not yet open. A first round of funding will be made available as soon as possible.

Emergent Assistance Grant (not income and assets tested)

Assistance for immediate, unexpected needs such as temporary accommodation, food, essential clothing and medication. If you are eligible, you will receive:

Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment (not income and assets tested)

Assists eligible people adversely affected by the Queensland floods and Cyclone Yasi.

If you are eligible, you will receive:

  • $1,000 per adult
  • $ 400 per eligible child

Essential Household Contents Grant (income and assets tested)

Assistance to replace household contents that have been lost or damaged. If you are eligible, you may receive:

Individual up to $1,705
Couple/family up to $5,120

If you are eligible, departmental officers will visit your home, to assess the damage and to complete an application form with you.

Structural Assistance Grant (income and assets tested)

A contribution towards repair of the residence to make it secure and safe to live in. The home must be owned by the applicant and their sole place of residence at the time of the disaster. If you are eligible, you may receive:

Couple/family up to $14,200*

*Any amounts you receive under Emergent Assistance and Essential Household Contents Grants will affect the amount you can get for the Structural Assistance Grant.

Essential Services Safety and Reconnection Grant (income and assets tested)

Provides home owners who are unable to claim insurance or are uninsured with a refund for the cost of safely reconnecting electricity, gas, water, sewage services and septic systems damaged by the disaster. If you are eligible, you may receive:

Purpose Amount payable
Safety inspections by accredited inspectors for pre inspection of electricity, gas, water, sewage services and septic systems damaged by the disaster. Up to $200 (per service)
Reinstating services to Australian Standards by qualified tradespeople, after the disaster. Up to $4,200

Safety inspection payments will be refunded to the home owner. Reinstatement costs will be paid directly to the repairer by the Department of Communities.

If you have already claimed or been assessed for an Essential Household Contents Grant or Structural Assistance Grant simply send receipts or invoices for inspections, repairs and materials to Grants Processing, Community Recovery, GPO Box 806 Brisbane 4001.

Income and assets test

Income and assets tests apply to:

  • Essential Household Contents Grant (Cyclone Yasi and Queensland floods)
  • Structural Assistance Grant (Cyclone Yasi and Queensland floods)
  • Essential Services Safety and Reconnection Grant (Queensland floods).

To be eligible for these grants, you must live in a Queensland floods declared area or Cyclone Yasi declared area, be uninsured (or unable to claim on insurance) and meet the test criteria below.

Assets test (what you own)

Your house (primary residence), your household contents and one motor vehicle are not included in these asset amounts.

Income test (how much you earn)

Individual $704* per week ($36,600 per year before tax) + $51 per dependent
Couple $930* per week ($48,360 per year before tax) + $51 per dependent

+ 2 dependents $806 individual or $1,032 couple
+ 3 dependents $857 individual or $1,083 couple
+ 4 dependents $908 individual or $1,134 couple
+ 5 dependents $959 individual or $1,185 couple
+ 6 dependents $1,010 individual or $1,236 couple
+ 7 dependents $1,061 individual or $1,287 couple
+ 8 dependents $1,112 individual or $1,338 couple

*Reduced grants may be available if you earn up to $40 per week more than these amounts.

Applications will be assessed on a case by case basis. You'll need to discuss your eligibility for these grants with officers from the department.
